What a weird movie. Bunraku is about a young man on a quest for revenge, and yet it’s about so much more too. It’s a classic story of good vs. evil painted against a strange and unique backdrop, filled with known faces like Demi Moore, Josh Hartnett, Woody Harrelson, and Ron Perlman. The story is set in a future where guns are non-existent and weapons have circled back to swords and fists. A drifter, a bartender, and a young samurai join forces to overthrow the most powerful man ruling the city, who is at his core simply a thug and the ruling leader of a gang. The previews made this film look really intriguing. I can’t say it wasn’t interesting, but it was odd. I liked some of the good vs. evil message underlying all else, but some of the fight scenes, and other story filler were not very compelling. It was just such a strange, mixed bag of visual images and story. You would probably have to either really like some of the actors or have an affinity for fantasy to enjoy this flick. We had a little of both so it was worth watching but not something I’d watch again.
Ever notice how you come across somebody once in a while you shouldn’t have f’ed with? That’s me.
