Don Jon is about a 20-something young man who is addicted to porn. It’s a weird movie. I wanted to see it because Joseph Gordon-Levitt wrote and directed it. It’s not a bad movie or story. I actually think the performances in it were well-done. The story is unique and therefore interesting to me; it’s a little awkward to watch given the content. Scarlett Johansson plays the lead female role and I think she’s spot on with the character; I just can’t stand her character. But, we aren’t supposed to like her. There’s not a lot that happens or a whole lot of transformation in Jon, Gordon-Levitt’s character, but there’s enough that I can appreciate the intent of the story. There are some enjoyably subtle discoveries and changes in Jon and some clever moments of comedy throughout. Don’s review during the final credits = “Well that sucked.” (I think he enjoyed it more than he admits. I know he liked Tony Danza’s performance as Jon’s father.) So, there you have it, two totally different reactions. Overall, I wouldn’t recommend it unless you are like me and simply want to see what Gordon-Levitt’s writing and directorial debut looks like.
“If you want to lose yourself, you have to lose yourself in another person. It’s a two-way thing.”
